Download Free Norton AntiVirus software

Filed under: Computers — Dan @ 6:20 pm

You’ve heard it over and over again… always have Antivirus software on your computer if you plan to do anything online. Well, some of those antivirus programs cost a pretty penny these days. Norton and McAfee cost nearly $30 per year just for their subscriptions. And if you have several computers in your house that’s suddenly a fair chunk of change!

So, let’s take a look at a new free computer protection offering that Google has come out with that allows you to download free Norton AntiVirus! Free? That’s not a bad price, but how good is it?

Well, the Norton software is included in Google’s new Google Pack that includes over a dozen computer programs. The Norton program includes unlimited free Virus-definition updates, plus you’re able to schedule a weekly/daily scan of your computer. A fair number of features for a free program.

What about the other Google Pack programs? Spyware Doctor is another nice program that offers real-time protection from Spyware and free updates as well. Add this program to Norton Antivirus program and you suddenly have a pretty good computer protection package for n-o-t-h-i-n-g!

Plus, the Google Pack has over 10 other interesting programs for free. These programs range from Photo Editing software to Music & Video players. It’s no wonder Google seems to be taking over the internet these days… they’re everywhere with all kinds of products!

MIS - For People & Search Engines?

Filed under: Computers — Dan @ 8:04 pm

MIS, or the McGrath Information Solution, is a specification aimed at providing information about a media file, be it an image, video, or audio, by imbedding that information directly into it. The idea that I’ve been sponsored to review, then, is that users will have easy access to information regarding a media file they may not have, or may have to go searching for, right at their fingertips.

The application of the MIS specification can be wide-spread. When watching a video you can access information regarding cast, crew, or interesting bits of “did you knows”. There was some cable channel that would have pop-ups during their films of odd facts about a specific scene, except MIS wouldn’t be annoying enough to randomly pop-up on you. Audio files can have info we’re used to with MP3s, and images can tell us who we’re looking at, where they are and when it was taken. More interesting in image cases, in my opinion, would be specific details on how the photographer took the picture. Amateurs would benefit from knowing the aperture and f-stop used to gain a certain affect, impression or detail.

The broader benefit though, and probably the one set to benefit our online world the most, would be the ability for search engines to read the information in order to properly index the file. Imagine better search results for videos, songs and images.

Well, that’s the basics of the MIS specification. I definitly see the positive implications, and as someone who works with search engines for a living, its something to consider as search technology broadens.

HP Ink Cartridges

Filed under: Computers — Dan @ 8:02 pm

Ok, so I checked out an online store where you can buy ink cartridges for HP printers. True, they’ve got toner cartridges for other printers too (like Dell, Canon, Brother, Lexmark, Epson, Samsung….wait, Samsung makes printers? Who knew! I love Samsung products!)…where was I, oh, I came across the HP cartridges selection/prices/policies of CartridgeSave.co.uk site.

How does one review ink cartridges? They’re small, black, have stickers with cryptic Da Vinci-like codes on them that require the Rosetta Stone to decipher which printers they go with. Not real exciting. But, my conclusion on how exactly to give an opinion on this seemed to come easy…maybe too easy.

That’s because we all hate how much toner costs these days. We buy a $60 printer that comes with free ink, but refills are $60, so we should just buy another printer. Honestly, as horrid as it may sound *slaps self with 10 year old ball mouse* I’ve never thought about buying printer ink online. That changes today! I’ll never step into another store with overpriced ink again! (almost 4 months too late for a new years resolution, but what the hell)

So this CartridgeSave.co.uk offers ink cartridges, and, actually, at cheaper than you might expect prices.

And, they ship your Hewlett-Packard (or Dell, Epson, SAMSUNG…yadda yadda yadda) ink cartridges to you free. So you save on gas too, and that’s no small thing these days. And time, sure time too. And I don’t have to get dressed, which is nice. My teeth can continue to rot and belly-button lint continue to collect. Because, outside is so 1997.

What’s cool too, though, is if that HP toner doesn’t work (maybe the squid was sick?) then you can actually return it. They give you 30 days. If its little plastic self is broken, you return it to them and get your money back.

So what’s not to like? Affordable HP ink, free delivery, and if it don’t work…no prob. I guess buying toner from CartridgeSave.co.uk is the smart thing to do.

As you were, people.

I knew it: HP printers stop working after a certain page count.

Filed under: Computers — Dan @ 9:46 am

Ok, granted, this could be a disgruntled employee, but considering the continuous problems with HP products that people have experienced, the claim by an ex-employee that after a certain number of pre-determined printed pages HP printers stop working does not surprise me.

The article.

I knew it: HP printers stop working after a certain page count.
